Cannington

Cannington, a little village in Somerset, a few miles northwest of Bridgwater. I’m here for work on the two hottest days of the year at a time when people are losing their minds because it’s a bit warmer than they are used to. (Yes, I know, I’ve written countless times moaning about hot weather.) It may be hot, but it isn’t going to stop me having a wander around the village. As you may have seen from previous posts, I do like an old village.

I start outside Cannington Court, the former priory and a Grade I listed building, now run by EDF as a training centre. It is a stunning building and one that probably deserves a write up all of its own.

From there I head along Church Lane to the Globe pub at the bottom.

Mill lane runs away to my right with it’s nicely painted old cottages.

However, I turn right alongside the Priory Barn,

And towards the entrance into the church of St Mary the Virgin. Another Grade I listed building, and its tower is an imposing hulk of sandstone, much the same as the neighbouring Cannington Court.

Full details on the church can be found in my piece on it here.

Passing through the churchyard I popped through a little alleyway (yes, I do love an alleyway)

out onto the main route through the village opposite the local newsagents and next to the exceptionally large parish council building. One that seems excessive in size compared to the size of the village.

I head around the outside of the grounds of Cannington Court, with its walls being tall and preventing any chance of a glance into the large area behind them.

It is nice to see an old road direction sign, one at ground level instead of the aluminium ones way up above the road.

I come back nearly full circle to another large Georgian house that sits overlooking the little village triangle.

I head up past the Bridgwater College campus that occupies a large part of the village, and just before I end up in the surrounding countryside I turn on to the noticeably quiet and narrow Park Lane. (Nothing like the wide hotel laden road I took a bus along on my way through London to get to Somerset this morning.) On the corner is an old George VI embedded post box, which sadly looks as if it is no longer in use.

The sun is out, and it feels as if it is getting as hot as they said it would be. And although it is a narrow lane, with some nice old cottages along its length (amongst some newer builds), there is no shade.

The lane winds back around to Main Street coming out next to the Rose and Crown pub.

Tucked away on the other side of the road at the edge of the village is this nice little granite church. It is the United Reformed Church, but the build looks more as if it is in a Baptist style.

I turn and head back towards my starting point, with old buildings on either side of the road.

And another pub, this time The Kings Head.

Next to which is a Spar, which always makes me smile, and I can add the village to the list of places it would be good to visit on a spa day.

Then there is the old post office. Which I was lining up for the perfect shot only for a Brakes lorry to pull into the bus stop in front of it with a delivery for the said Spar. So, I had to move and take it at a bit of an angle.

The old gates look like an entrance to a park. And they probably were, but now they are another entrance into the Bridgwater College campus.

And then I’m back at Cannington Court where I walk through to go to the Cannington Walled Garden (attached to the RHS), but it is closed.

With that it is time to stop my little tour, to get back into the shade and have some well needed liquids.
